Code Books & Exam Prep
The references most electricians use to pass their licensing exam and look up code on the job.
NFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC), 2023 Edition
The official NEC published by NFPA. This is the book your exam is written from — every licensing exam in the US is scored against it. A non-negotiable reference for any electrician studying for journeyman or master.
Why we recommend it: Most state exams allow you to bring your own copy into the test. Tab it, highlight it, and learn to navigate it before exam day.
Mike Holt's Illustrated Guide to Electrical Exam Preparation, 2023 NEC
The gold standard textbook for learning electrical theory, grounding, box fill, and motor calculations. Renowned for its clear, full-color illustrations that make complex code concepts easy to visualize.
Why we recommend it: While other books just test you, Mike Holt actually teaches you the formulas and logic behind the code. Perfect for deep conceptual understanding.
DEWALT Electrical Licensing Exam Guide, 2023 NEC
A comprehensive study guide featuring hundreds of practice questions, formula cheat sheets, and mock exams designed to simulate journeyman and master licensing tests.
Why we recommend it: Passing open-book exams requires practicing lookups under time pressure. The DeWalt guide provides realistic, exam-style practice questions.
Ugly's Electrical References, 2026 Edition
The pocket-sized cheat sheet electricians actually carry on the job. Conduit fill, wire ampacity, motor data, conversions — fast lookups for everything you do daily.
Why we recommend it: Cheap, durable, and answers 80% of common field questions without opening the full code book. Most exam-takers also use it as a study supplement.
Tom Henry's Key Word Index
A specialized index that maps NEC topics to exact code sections by keyword. Designed specifically for open-book exam speed — finding the right article fast is what separates passers from re-testers.
Why we recommend it: On a timed open-book exam, your bottleneck is lookup speed, not knowledge. This index can shave minutes per question.
2023 NEC Quick-Tabs / EZ Tabs
Color-coded self-adhesive index tabs designed to label crucial sections of the National Electrical Code, including Grounding (Article 250), Conductors (Article 310), and Motors (Article 430).
Why we recommend it: Code exams are race-against-the-clock tests. High-quality tabs cut search time in half by letting you flip straight to the right chapter.
NEC Quick-Card (Laminated Reference Card)
A laminated, 6-page folding card containing key tables and formulas for conductors, conduit fill, motor currents, voltage drop, and electrical symbols.
Why we recommend it: A durable, spill-proof reference you can throw in your toolbox or truck. Great for quick checks on the job site.

Hand tools and test equipment that working electricians rely on every day.
Klein Tools 32500 11-in-1 Screwdriver / Nut Driver
The single most carried hand tool among working electricians. Combines 8 tip sizes and 3 nut driver sizes into one tool — replaces a whole drawer of drivers.
Why we recommend it: If you only buy one Klein tool, this is it. Used on virtually every residential and commercial service call.
Klein Tools D213-9NE 9-Inch Lineman's Pliers
Heavy-duty 9-inch lineman's pliers with high-leverage design and induction-hardened cutting knives. Ideal for cutting, twisting, and pulling wires, and hammering staples.
Why we recommend it: Often referred to simply as 'Kleins', this is the most iconic and frequently-used tool in an electrician's pouch. Built to last a career.
Klein Tools 11055 wire stripper/cutter
Precision-ground stripping holes for 10-18 AWG solid and 12-20 AWG stranded wire. Cleanly cuts copper wire, features double-dipped comfort grips, and has a serrated nose for easy bending.
Why we recommend it: You will strip thousands of wires as an apprentice or helper. These are reliable, comfortable, and hold their edge exceptionally well.
Klein Tools NCVT-3P Dual-Range Non-Contact Voltage Tester
Detects both low voltage (12-48V AC) and standard voltage (70-1000V AC). Features a built-in bright flashlight, water-resistance, and dustproofing with a rugged drop rating.
Why we recommend it: The most crucial safety tool in your pocket. Always test before you touch — non-contact testers provide a quick check of active voltage.
Fluke 117 Electrician's True-RMS Multimeter
The industry-standard multimeter for electricians. True-RMS for accurate readings on non-linear loads (VFDs, electronics), non-contact voltage detection, and a low-impedance mode that ignores ghost voltages.
Why we recommend it: Fluke is the gold standard for field-grade meters. The 117 is the model most pros recommend for residential and light commercial work.
Fluke 323 True-RMS Clamp Meter
Measures AC current up to 400A, AC/DC voltage, and resistance. True-RMS sensing for accuracy on non-linear signals. Compact design for tight spaces.
Why we recommend it: A clamp meter lets you measure load current safely without breaking the circuit. The Fluke 323 is incredibly reliable and durable.
Klein Tools 935R Torpedo Level
Heavy-duty magnetic torpedo level featuring rare-earth magnets, a thumb screw to attach to conduit, and high-visibility vials for measuring 0, 30, 45, and 90 degrees.
Why we recommend it: Essential for making precise conduit bends and ensuring panels, boxes, and conduit runs are perfectly straight and level.
Klein Tools 56005 50-Foot Steel Fish Tape
50 feet of high-strength spring steel tape inside a rugged case. Case design reduces payout effort and absorbs shock when dropped. Features laser-etched depth markings.
Why we recommend it: Crucial for pulling wires through conduit, walls, and under floors. The flat steel tape won't curl or catch on obstacles inside pipe.
Advanced Test Equipment
High-end diagnostic gear and specialty meters for industrial, commercial, and troubleshooting work.
